Position Overview:
Reporting to the Parks Foreperson and under the direction of the Horticulturist, the Gardener will be responsible for the day-to-day care and preservation of the Town’s green space areas and parks, including making recommendations and assisting in the development of procedures that pertain to all aspects of the Town Beautification Program. Additional assistance will be required with routine clean-up, garbage removal from all parks, special events and winter maintenance activities, as directed.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepares flower beds, by hand digging or rototilling and raking, for planting; prepares plants and maintains flower beds, hanging baskets, and plants in greenhouses;
- Maintains plant materials in a park area in a neat and orderly manner;
- Participates in the design, preparation, planting and maintenance of horticultural displays, turf grass areas, indoor and natural area plantings and landscapes including all aspects of Plant Health Care inclusive of Integrated Pest Management and pesticide use;
- Maintain landscaped areas and municipal horticultural displays;
- Contribute to environmental awareness programs;
- Foster Community Involvement in Town Beautification .
- Support natural and cultural heritage conservation initiatives;
- Contribute and participate in seasonal displays.
Qualifications:
- Secondary school diploma or equivalent horticulture education and/or substantial practical horticulture experience is required;
- Possession of an Industrial Vegetation Pesticide Licence and/or Ministry of the Environment Landscape Pesticide Licence (or equivalent);
- Considerable experience as a practicing gardener;
- Demonstrated experience in small equipment operation, landscaping, and turf maintenance;
- Demonstrated ability to operate, inspect and maintain irrigation systems;
- Excellent communication, customer service, and organizational skills;
- Strong organizational and decision‑making skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team;
- Working knowledge of Town properties and municipal operations is considered an asset;
- Physically capable of performing all duties of the position, including heavy lifting and working outdoors in adverse and extreme weather conditions;
- Possession of a valid, unrestricted Class “G” Ontario Driver’s License with a satisfactory driver’s abstract;
- Standard First Aid, CPR/AED Level “C”, is required;
- Ability to obtain a satisfactory Criminal Reference Check (Level 1);
- Reliable and flexible, with the ability to work a variety of shifts, including days, evenings, weekends, statutory holidays, and overtime on short notice.
NOTE: This role is subject to the terms and conditions outlined in the Collective Agreement between the Town and CUPE Local 3115.
Hourly rate - $ 32.62 probationary rate / $ 36.24 Job rate
